In the 1920s, Germans were able to travel for the first time thanks to secure and paid holidays. But the National Socialists first invented mass tourism with "Strength through Joy" - the concept also left its mark on divided Germany. By the mid-1950s, more West Germans were travelling than before the war. Today, almost three quarters of Germans go on holiday once a year.
